Delicate vine readily recognized by the 'upside-down' flowers, normally the upper petal (banner) of the blossoms of this family is in an upright or uppermost position.

Sprawling, trailing, vigorously twining herbaceous vine; stem often branched, to 5 ft (150 cm), but usually much shorter.

Flower to 3.8 cm long, petals 5, purple rose to pale lavender, the banner is usually wider than long, wide-spreading, notched at tip; side petals much smaller, folded together and covering keel petals. Flowers one to a few, hanging in upside-down position, in clusters from leaf axils; only one flower in a cluster open at a time.

Leaves 1-4 inch (3-10 cm) long, altenrate, long-stalked, the blade divided in 3 leaflests each 6 cm long.
